The Differences Between Bloodborne and Darksouls

The Differences Between Bloodborne and Darksouls

Bloodborne was released on March 24th 2015 and was surprisingly similar to Fromsofts other well known game series Darksouls. Then exactly a year later on march 24th 2016 Darksouls 3 was released, which was even more like Bloodborne like it's previous games. And that's why I'm here to point out a few of the differences between the two games.

The first difference is probably the most obvious, the setting. Bloodborne changes out the medieval setting of Darksouls for a a dark gothic horror setting with Cthulu beats running around. Instead of going through big medieval towns and fighting giant knights in Lothic, Lordran and Drangelic in the souls series, in bloodborne you travel throughout the land of Yharnam, most of it being a gothic and dark 1800s like town, with beasts and such running around. Another thing about the setting in Bloodborne vs Darksouls. In all three of the darksouls games, you run the risk of turning hallow, turning your skin into beef jerky basically. Honestly that takes the immersion out of the game if I can't see my character that I spent hours on making.

Another thing is the combat, now at first glance the combat in Bloodborne might look exactly the same as Darksouls, But I'll point out the differences. Darksouls combat is very much about looking for the right point to strike and guarding, with it's many shields in the game it lends its self it that. On the other hand, Bloodborne has two shields, one of them just being a few wooden planks strapped together, and neither of them are really good. Though what Bloodborne has that darksouls hasn't is guns. In your left hand you will be able to carry a gun that depending on the gun can be used in various ways. Some guns like the Blunderbuss and Ludwig's rifle burst when shot, so when shot from range does very minimal damage if it even manages to hit, but up front it does way better damage. Then guns like the Hunter Pistol and the Evelyn only shoot one at a time, though they're still good at close range, they work a lot better at range then the burst guns do. And all guns are able to parry. If you shoot someone while they're in the middle of their attack they'll be stunned, and then ready for a visceral attack.

Also Bloodborne's weapons are Trick Weapons, meaning most of them have another mode that you can switch to with L1,and the ones that don't have some sort of buff that gets applied to them instead like the Tontirus. For example the Sawcleaver starters off as a small saw you hold to do quick damage, but by clicking l1 it opens up to turn into a large ranged cleaver. Another example is the Threaded Cane which, already acts like a sword but then turns into a whip with surprisingly far range to keep enemies at bay.

Theres a ton more differences to the games, I could go into chalice dungeons and the blood vial system but all those are just the basics, if you'd like to hear about the more complicated differences let me know in the comments.
